Christmas is a time to get together with the family and enjoy eating good food and spreading the Christmas cheer. If we’re not careful, all this extra activity can leave us feeling burnt out. Follow our handy tips to avoid the holiday slump and instead enjoy the most of the holiday period.

  • Don’t leave your shopping to the last minute
Whether it’s present shopping or food shopping, too many people spend weeks worrying about getting the shopping done at Christmas– it’s far easier to do it when you first start thinking about it. Start stocking up with the supplies as soon as possible.

  •  Share the load
If you’re responsible for cooking and hosting the Christmas Day activities make sure you don’t get stuck with all the responsibility. Ask other family members to bring different parts of the meal, such as snacks, salads or desserts – don’t be afraid to ask for help. You could even rope in the kids to help out.

  • Be Silly
Christmas is meant to be a time of celebration and laughter. So wear the paper hat and read the jokes, let the kids get a little crazy and don’t be afraid to take some time out for YOU.

  • Have an Action Plan
Try writing an action plan for the week and stick to it. You will undoubtedly face some difficult situations and things will surely change, but if you have a feeling of control, you will probably stay that way. The panic caused by decisions made at the last minute is not healthy and can be very expensive.

  • Budget
Think about your budget and try not to stray from it. You should know how much you can spend, so make a list before you go shopping. There are plenty of deals around Christmas time, so make sure you take advantage of them!

  • Don’t Overeat!
Overeating is one of the biggest challenges people face at Christmas time, but the good news is you don’t have to give up the foods you love to keep on top of your health. Load up your plate with salads and veggies first then try a little bit of everything else you want to eat. If you finish eating your meal and still feel hungry; put your fork down and wait 20 minutes.
  • Booze control
Food isn’t the only thing we overindulge in during summer. In Australia, our weekly average alcohol intake triples during the festive season. Make sure you’re drinking water or soft drink in between to stay hydrated and pace yourself.
