Much like John Snow says, Winter is coming, and here at Ruttley Services we want to make sure you’re prepared for the colder weather. It is often the case that people overlook seasonal maintenance tasks, out of sight out of mind! But if you’re smart about it, small check ups throughout the year can save you a lot of hassle in the long run! If you keep up a regular schedule of inspecting your hot water system, you will save yourself a lot of money. Below we’ve listed a few ways you can keep your hot water system in tip top shape!

Regular Inspection:
It’s always a good idea to inspect your hot water system on a regular basis. To help you remember, pick a date each month to check the system thoroughly. Look for cracks, wearing or any water leakage. It may be a hassle at the time, but it will save you money in the long run.

Temperature Pressure Relief (TPR) Valve:
This is an important part of your hot water system that needs regular checking. First google your make and model so you know exactly what to look for. This relief valve is designed to relieve pressure so it’s vital to have it working correctly. This should be checked every 6 months.

Get yearly professional services:
Don’t wait until there is a problem, which could end up being really costly – organise with your local plumber to have your system serviced once per year. A professional will be able to pinpoint any potential issues before they get to be serious problems and will make sure your system is running as efficiently as possible. Every 5 years it is recommended replace the sacrificial anode as this can corrode and cause issues with your hot water cylinder. If you are finding you have dangerously hot water, call us today to have a tempering valve installed.

Sacrificial anode:
Check out our diagram to find out what you need to look out for. Your hot water system may look sturdy from the outside, but if this isn’t in new condition it can cause a whole heap of problems. You want your anode to look like the top picture, rather than eroded away like the bottom one. If it has been eroded, give us a call and we can switch those out for you, it is important to have a new one installed whenever it looks worn.

With these helpful tips you should help you save a few dollars and headache in the long run. If you’re unsure about anything it’s best to give us a call and we’ll get you sorted. Our number is 9199 2015 and we’re always on call to fix any problem you come up against.
